Celebrating Emergency Week: Remote Emergency Nurse Educator of the Year

Wendy Young, ANZCEN’s 2021 Rural/Remote Emergency Nurse Educator of the Year, fell into Emergency Nursing after relocating from Melbourne to Derby WA.

“Derby is a small bush emergency department which also operates the vital ambulance service for a large area. A huge change from the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.”

While at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Wendy worked in burns and trauma, “so catastrophic injuries were not unfamiliar to me,” however being a first responder with limited resources “was a whole new experience”.

“Thankfully one that really motivated me to learn how to use my knowledge and limited resources to the best of my ability. I then became really passionate about teaching others so that they wouldn’t feel so out of their comfort zone.”
